Licence, plainly
A GOOD SEASON AND A STANDARD ARE NOT THE SAME THING.
Canada Soccer licenses amateur youth clubs in four steps. Every Ontario member club has to reach the first one. That’s the point of the first one.
Quality Soccer Provider
Canada Soccer’s entry-level designation, and “the minimum standard expected of all organizations operating within the Ontario Soccer membership structure.” Its technical bar is a safe, accessible and inclusive soccer experience. About 177 Ontario clubs are listed at it, as listed by Ontario Soccer.
Member Association Level 1
Clubs that meet standards set by Canada Soccer in partnership with their member association.
Member Association Level 2
The same standard, one step higher. A club must already hold MA Level 2 before it can even apply for the national licence.
National Youth Club LicenceWHITECAPS LONDON, 2019
Canada Soccer’s highest amateur club designation. To hold it a club has to put a technical plan, a game model, a player management pathway, a technical lead with advanced certification, a sport-science and medicine plan, advanced facilities and a physical headquarters in front of Ontario Soccer ... then survive a documentation review, a leadership interview, one announced site visit and one unannounced one. 25 Ontario clubs are on the list as holding it.
Your player’s season can be good and still have no published training floor, no assessed technical plan and no site visit behind it. That isn’t a failing. It’s what the entry tier is for.

The rule nobody tells you
NOBODY IS ALLOWED TO COME AND GET YOUR PLAYER.
An OPDL licence holder may not approach a player at another OPDL club. Not a call, not a message, not a word to the player. Ontario Soccer writes it down.

Outside the OPDL ... through a parent, and the club tells that player’s technical director first.
OPDL Operational Rules, Rule 29(c)Approaching a player improperly is a disciplinary offence with a fine attached. Outside the OPDL the rules open one step ... a player can be watched in their own environment and contacted through a parent, and the club has to tell that player’s own technical director first.
So the route in has a name and a direction. Ontario Soccer calls it the Talented Pathway, and its first step is a parent saying who their player is. Waiting to be spotted isn’t a strategy. It’s a rule you’re on the wrong side of.

Ontario Soccer runs it.
The Ontario Player Development League is the province’s standards-based U13 to U17 development league, launched in 2014. Ontario Soccer’s own words: it “operates more as an optimized player training program than merely a league.”

The training volume is a rule.
198 hours of training a year, a minimum of 4.5 hours a week, excluding matches and sport-science work. A licence holder has to provide it. It isn’t an ambition, it’s a condition.

May to October, then you sign.
The competition season generally runs May to October, with scheduled breaks and a two-week mid-season rest. Before the registration deadline every player is issued a Player Commitment Letter, and it binds them to the club for the season.

of Ontario’s provincial programme has been identified from the OPDL.
The range is Ontario Soccer’s own: 74.2% in 2018 to 92.7% in 2016. OPDL Eight-Year Review (2014 to 2022), independent evaluation by Capitis Consulting, published December 2022, page 4.And it does not stop at provincial. Of the 1,511 players rostered to League1 Ontario teams in 2022, 436 came through the OPDL ... 28.9%.

LEADS Academy
An elite stream inside the club for players on a higher trajectory. Iron sharpens iron. The only club in southwestern Ontario with an elite stream in-house.
Entry starts with a head coach naming a player as technically, tactically or physically advanced. Somebody from the technical team then watches sessions to judge whether they can step up without being overwhelmed. It is fully funded, and a 90-minute session a week is included in the programme.

The only club in southwestern Ontario with three A-Licence coaches on our technical staff: Rob Pereira, Anthony Vassallo and Holger Kraft.
Holger Kraft ... a former Hertha Berlin professional and a longtime coach and scout for Germany’s U12 to U14 boys’ national teams ... is a senior advisor on our technical staff and reviews game film for selected players.
Strength and conditioning
Need to get bigger, stronger, faster? Strength and conditioning is included in your OPDL programme, run by certified coaches.
It runs once a week, usually a Tuesday or Thursday evening. Ontario Soccer requires the trainers to hold licensing that proves they understand exercise physiology, kinesiology, injury prevention and performance technique.

Analytics and exposure
Pro analytics software and a coaching and athlete education space in our BMO Centre office. Your player sees their own numbers, and is on the NCAA recruiting portal through HUDL.
After a game they open it, tap their own name, and every clip from that game comes out. They build their own reel, and they control who sees it.

No club in the area has promoted more athletes to post-secondary opportunities. This is where you start.
Players have gone on to Canadian university programmes, NCAA Division 1 and Division 2, professional academies in Canada and Europe, and national and provincial team programmes. The club names categories, never a school, because that is a family’s own business.
It doesn’t push a route either: the programme your player wants, their academic scores, the country and the level decide what is plausible, and the club then helps find the options that fit.

A dedicated bursary for families in need, and scholarships for top student athletes.
The bursary is funded partly by the club and partly by Ontario Soccer. It takes a few forms, including proof of income, and the club walks a family through them so that anybody who needs help gets it.
The OPDL Athlete Scholarship is a separate grant, and the club applies on the family’s behalf. Your part is simply telling us.
David’s position on it is plain: this is a jump in commitment, London is expensive right now, and a family that needs help gets walked through payment plans, the bursary, or an application to Ontario Soccer. Ask before you count yourself out.

Open trials
Your player attends at least three open trials before anyone makes a decision about them, and a session is capped at 35 players. You register online first ... the OPDL doesn’t support walk-up evaluation.
Invitation-only trials
Players are invited forward from the open sessions. Selection runs through the technical team as open sessions, combines, trials and game-based evaluation ... the club’s own description of its process.
Already in OPDL at another club? A player who has signed a Player Commitment Letter for the coming season isn’t eligible to trial with another licence holder, and a parent or guardian has to make the first contact. “Any OPDL player, with an active Player Commitment Letter, trialing with another Licence Holder must be in possession of a completed OPDL Trial Permission Form.”

The club
Whitecaps London runs OPDL as its premier high-performance pathway for boys and girls at U13 to U17. It works in alignment with Ontario Soccer and the Vancouver Whitecaps BMO Academy Centre, with integration into the Vancouver Whitecaps BMO Academy system including MLS Academy and Girls Elite REX pathways. Whitecaps London is the official youth academy of Railway City FC, whose U20 Reserves and Pro-Am sides play in League1 Ontario.

They finish the season they are already in. Nothing about trialling removes them from their current team, and no decision is made on any player before their third open trial.

Only if you tell them, unless we approach the player ... and outside the OPDL, if we ever do, the rules require us to notify their technical director first. Inside the OPDL we may not approach them at all.

OPDL runs U13 to U17, so a 15-year-old is mid-band, not late. The intake is players born 2010 to 2014 ... U13 to U17 in the 2027 season ... and no decision is made on any player before their third open trial.
When and where are the trials?
Confirmed by email once you register. The OPDL doesn’t support walk-up evaluation of players, which means the sign-up comes first and the date comes second ... for everyone, at every club.
Can my teenager fill the form in themselves?
The form asks for a parent or guardian, so a teenager should hand this page over rather than submit it. If your player is already registered with another OPDL licence holder there is also a rule about it: contact about a transfer or trial is only permitted when the parent or guardian makes the first move.
